It is incredibly popular in today’s culture to save energy and reduce a person’s carbon footprint. Residents of the United Kingdom are trying to out “green” each other in an effort to show that they are saving more power than their friends and colleagues. Energy saving ideas are traded the way recipes, money saving ideas and home improvement tips were once traded.
Today, people trade carbon footprint reduction tips just like they used to share cooking ideas or repair hints. It is surprising that with all the attention that people are placing on saving energy that water is still being wasted in vast amounts. Even the residents who have tiny carbon footprints seem to have failed to understand that it is just as important to save water as well!
Did you know that the fresh water resources in the United Kingdom will most likely run out within the next thirty to forty years? That seems highly unlikely because of how much rain the United Kingdom receives every year but there are experts who insist that the fresh water resources are not as vast as they originally thought. It is now a fact that both Syria and the Sudan have more fresh water available than the United Kingdom, and these are parts of the world that are known for their arid climates and droughts!
The rate at which water is being wasted is surprising because it is easier to save water than it is to waste it. It is very easy to turn of water faucets and spigots when they are not being used. When it comes time to brush your teeth, simply fill your water cup and use the water from the sink to rinse your toothbrush. Don’t let the water run throughout the entire routine. Your dishwasher most likely has a water saving function built into it.
Showers don’t need to be long”even five minute showers use an incredible amount of water. Only wash dishes or do laundry when you still have a full load. Vegetables can be rinsed off in a pan of water instead of being run under a running faucet. Water can be kept in a pitcher in the refrigerator instead of letting it run to reach the desired cold temperature. A lawn doesn’t need to have sprinklers watering it all day.
The amount of water an adult uses in one day can easily be cut down. Water is the world’s most important resource and it needs to be protected. Nobody should take having fresh water for granted. Saving water is just as important as saving energy and reducing your carbon footprint. Cutting back water consumption is easy and is something people should work at just as diligently as they work at cutting down their energy use.
