Perhaps you’ve heard that upgrading your memory is important. Or maybe you’ve heard about upgrading the processor, motherboard, or graphics card. There are many upgrades that are possible for most computers, it’s just a matter of getting the best bang for the buck.

Not only is installing more memory pretty cheap, most people can get it done for between $50-200. But, it’s also the most effective as well. It can improve your entire computing experience. From browsing the web, to doing multi-tasking, having more than one computer program running. It’s especially important in families where the computer is used by different users. As that can be very memory intensive.

The amount of memory you’ll need depends on what you use the computer for. So called power users who are playing games, creating videos and DVDs aren’t going to be happy with less than a few gigabytes of memory. But, at the very least, you should shoot for at least 512MB of memory, and 1GB if you plan on using Microsoft Vista.

What you must keep in mind is that sometimes it’s difficult to match the memory you need with the computer. You have to have the right size, and picking the right speed memory makes a difference as well.

Laptops in particular are especially unforgiving of the memory that can be installed. There are different speed variations of memory, different sizes (laptops use different size than desktops). Generally you can consult with your manufacturer of your computer, or your documentation to find out what type of memory chip you need.

But, even that’s not enough. It’s important to know that there is space in the PC for the extra memory. Each computer can have from 1 to 4 or more slots for memory. Once you match the memory to the computer, now you have to verify that there is room for the extra memory. For instance if you have two memory slots, and the computer came with 512MB of memory, but it has no slots available. If you needed to get 1GB of memory, you could either buy two 512MB slots and replace what’s already in there, or you could buy one 1GB stick, and replace one of them giving you a grand total of 1GB + 256MB. Complicated I know, but necessary so that you don’t waste your money.

Typically you can find much of this in your user’s manual, or the manufacturer’s website. If not many of the memory manufacturers such as Kingston and Crucial have excellent websites that have the specs for most of the computers made in the last decade or two. That’s an excellent backup source of information.

Once you’ve done it once, you’ll quickly realize that upgrading your memory isn’t that difficult and you’ll find your computing experience to be much more pleasurable. Getting a good memory upgrade can prolong the useful life of even ancient(4-5 year old) computers by allowing them to be functional for years longer. If you find your computer processes to be slowing down, and you’re waiting around for what seems like hours for the most trivial tasks, exploring a memory upgrade might be an important step for you.
